Dispatchers and call takers in Coquitlam and Langley RCMP Detachments migrated to the new system November 3, 2026, wrapping up the changeover to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1).
It’s a federally mandated transition project from analog to digital led by E-Comm 9-1-1.
In a news release, BC RCMP says there will be no noticeable difference in how the public can access help from police.
Callers will continue to reach a 9-1-1 call taker at E-Comm 9-1-1 who will ensure the call reaches the appropriate first responder agency.
The only immediate change is the implementation of a new technology solution being used to manage abandoned 9-1-1 calls.
Future capabilities of the new digital system will allow for real-time texting to 9-1-1, sharing live-stream videos and enhanced GPS and geographic information systems to ensure first responders are directed to a caller’s exact location.
However, there is no set deadline yet when those additional capabilities will be implemented.
