BURNABY – Homicide investigators in B.C. say charges have been laid against two people in the homicide of an 11-year-old boy who was reported missing in Burnaby in September 2025.
According to a statement from Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong, Burnaby RCMP received a report in Sept. 2025 to check on the well-being of 11-year-old Kai Pavlovic, who was last known to reside with his family in Burnaby.
Sgt. Fong says despite significant efforts over several days, police were unable to locate Kai. She says the investigation was subsequently escalated to a high-risk missing person investigation and assumed by Burnaby RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit (SCU).
Over the following months, SCU investigators conducted an extensive investigation, pursuing investigative avenues and following up on information provided by family members and the public.
On June 25, 2026, IHIT assumed conduct of the investigation. They worked closely with Burnaby SCU, and investigators continued diligent efforts to locate Kai and advance the investigation, which ultimately led to the discovery of his remains, Sgt. Fong says.
On Friday, October 30, 2026, IHIT investigators arrested 51-year-old Branko Bijelic of Burnaby. The BC Prosecution Service has approved charges of second-degree murder and indignity to human remains against Branko Bijelic. 46-year-old Sarah Bijelic of Burnaby was charged with one count of manslaughter.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share this update in the investigation into Kai’s death,” said Sgt. Fong. “There are no words to accurately express the sadness surrounding the circumstances. We recognize the concern this investigation has caused within the community, and our thoughts are with Kai’s loved ones and those affected by this tragedy. We thank the public for their assistance and for coming forward with information.”
IHIT is extending thanks to its law enforcement partners with Burnaby RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service for their assistance with this investigation.
“The laying of charges marks a significant milestone following more than a year of investigation,” Sgt. Fong said. “While this is an important development, our work continues as the case moves through the prosecution process.”
As this matter is now before the courts, Sgt. Fong says IHIT will not be releasing further information.
