CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack RCMP are warning about unsafe e-scooter use once again, after a youth riding one collided with a vehicle in a Yale Road parking lot. Police say the driver reported that the collision caused damage to the vehicle. The rider landed on the hood but declined medical attention and left on the e-scooter before officers arrived and hasn’t been identified.
The incident follows an Oct. 3 collision on Airport Road involving an adult man on an e-scooter and a semi-truck and trailer. The man was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Chilliwack Mounties say officers continue to respond to calls involving e-scooters almost daily. Police say the devices are being ridden unsafely on roadways and continue to be used by youths under 16, which is illegal.
Safety concerns come amid rising hospitalization numbers. Data released in August by the Canadian Institute for Health Information showed e-scooter-related hospitalizations increased by almost 40 per cent in one year.
There were 837 hospitalizations between April 2025 and March 2026, up from 601 in the previous 12-month period.
Hospitalizations involving children aged 15 and younger nearly tripled, rising from 54 to 150. Fractures and head and brain injuries were among the most common reasons for hospitalization.
