ABBOTSFORD – Abbotsford Police say they responded to a report of a man running toward another person while carrying a large knife in broad daylight this past weekend.
According to a statement from the Abbotsford Police Department, officers were called to the area of Hillcrest Avenue and Gladwin Road on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 24, at approximately 1:33 p.m., after getting contacted about a possible man running toward a member of the public as he carried a large knife.
Police say multiple officers attended the area and quickly located the suspect in the 32700 block of South Fraser Way. The man was taken into custody without incident, and officers recovered the knife.
Following a comprehensive and thorough investigation, information obtained by officers from witness accounts after the arrest did not corroborate criminal charges. As a result, police say the individual was released from custody. The knife was seized by police and will be destroyed.
“The Abbotsford Police Department recognizes that incidents involving weapons can be concerning for community members,” AbbyPD said in a statement. “We would like to thank the individuals who promptly reported this behaviour to police. Timely reporting allows officers to assess potential risks, respond quickly, and take appropriate action to help ensure public safety.”
While criminal charges were not pursued in this incident, Abbotsford Police encourage residents to continue reporting suspicious or concerning behaviour to police when they believe someone may pose a risk to themselves or others.
“Community vigilance and timely reporting play an important role in helping keep Abbotsford safe. In an emergency or where there is an immediate threat to public safety, call 9-1-1. Non-emergency incidents can be reported to the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225,” AbbyPD said.
