Life in jail for man convicted of killing Abbotsford and Surrey men
SURREY — The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says the investigation into the murders of Randeep Kang in Surrey and Jagvir Malhi in Abbotsford has wrapped up with first-degree murder convictions for 21-year-old Tyrel Nguyen.
According to an IHIT news release Friday (Jan. 12), Nguyen was sentenced to life imprisonment, with no eligibility for parole for 25 years following a 10-month-long Supreme Court trial. He was also found guilty of two counts of attempted murder for his involvement in the incident that resulted in the killing of Kang.
“What began as two separate investigations became a coordinated effort, made possible due to IHIT’s integration and strong partnerships with Abbotsford Police Department and the Surrey RCMP,” says Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of IHIT.
The investigation began with the October 27, 2017 murder of 27-year old Kang in Surrey. Abbotsford’s 19-year-old Malhi, was killed November 12, 2018. Nguyen was arrested December 20, 2019 following over two years of investigation work which included assistance from the Edmonton Police Service, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit – BC and the Alberta RCMP.
“This was a complex investigation,” said Pierotti. “I’m incredibly proud of all those that worked on this investigation and persevered over the past seven years.”
