ABBOTSFORD – Abbotsford Police say they’re aware of a just-released video circulating on social media that depicts officers arresting a violent individual during an incident last month.
According to a statement from Abbotsford PD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, police were called to a disturbance at a gas station at approximately 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, 2026, near Harris Road and Riverside Road in Matsqui Village. Multiple callers contacted emergency dispatch reporting that an altercation was in progress and that pepper spray had been deployed.
Sgt. Walker says the first officer to arrive was a plainclothes member operating an unmarked police vehicle equipped with emergency lighting which was activated at the time. Upon arrival, the officer exited her vehicle and engaged with a man who was involved in the disturbance.

The 28-year-old man immediately became assaultive toward the officer, striking her with a shirt and throwing multiple punches. Fortunately, she was able to avoid the punches and was not injured in the assault, Sgt. Walker said.
Additional officers arrived moments later, witnessed the assault occurring, and took immediate action to gain control of the suspect, Sgt. Walker said. The man was taken to the ground to stop the assault and prevent any further risk to officers, bystanders, and those involved in the incident, he said.
Despite repeated police commands to gain the man’s compliance, the man remained actively resistant and attempted to continue his assaultive behaviour, requiring several officers to safely gain control of the situation, Sgt. Walker said.
Based on the officers’ observations and assessment, officers suspected the man was experiencing a medical or mental health-related crisis. BC Emergency Health Services was requested to attend, and the man was subsequently apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital, where he received the care and support he required, Sgt. Walker said.
The video also shows the 28-year-old man being bear sprayed by an unknown person. Sgt. Walker says the video was just released yesterday, Wednesday, Nov. 4.
A charge of assaulting a police officer is being recommended by police, Sgt. Walker said.
“The Abbotsford Police Department recognizes that videos shared online often capture only a portion of an incident,” Sgt. Wallker said. “The safety of the public, responding officers, and all individuals involved remains our foremost priority when responding to dynamic and violent situations.”
