CHILLIWACK – A provincial highway road contractor tasked with maintaining roads and bridges in the eastern Fraser Valley, Fraser Canyon and Highway 3 southeast of Hope will hold a winter hiring fair and BBQ this coming weekend with starting wages of just over $38 an hour.
Emil Anderson Maintenance (EAM), a Ministry of Transportation and Transit contractor for three service areas in B.C., invites individuals who might be curious about a career in highway maintenance to attend an on-site hiring fair this Saturday, October 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 51160 Sache Street in Rosedale (Chilliwack).
Attendees can chat with staff from Emil Anderson and grab lunch while they’re at it.
According to its website, EAM has delivered reliable road and bridge maintenance across urban and rural corridors. Its personnel perform a full scope of highway maintenance activities, including vegetation control, drainage, sign and pavement repairs, concrete and wood bridge repair, gravel surface grading, anti icing, snow plowing, and incident and emergency response.
Based out of regional offices and yards, its skilled year-round workforce scales up during winter operations to adjust to seasonal demands and maintain prescribed response times on certain routes.
Each fall, EAM puts out the call for winter highway maintenance workers/labourers for the Service Area 7 (Fraser Valley) which includes Mission, Cultus Lake, Chilliwack, Rosedale, Agassiz, Hope, Boston Bar and Allison Pass. Of note, EAM hires seasonal, full-time position consisting of manual labour and operating plow trucks. The company says multiple positions are available.
Winter highway maintenance workers employed by EAM keep roads safe and reliable throughout the winter season. For example, workers can be expected to operate plow and sanding trucks, support hands-on road repairs, and work with a skilled crew to respond quickly and work safely in all weather. The company says winter work can be physically demanding, as crews take on labour-intensive roles that involve outdoor work in cold, snowy conditions and extended shifts when needed. If you enjoy working outdoors, take pride in essential community service, and thrive in a fast paced, team environment, this role is for you.
Although EAM is a union-affiliated organization, being an active member is not a prerequisite.
One of the prerequisites to employment is a minimum Class 3 with an air brake endorsement, as well as a valid Canadian driver’s license with a clean abstract. There are other required qualifications, including:
- Able to operate equipment safely and responsibly as per the Motor Vehicle Act standards and EAG’s internal standards.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather; role is labour‑intensive.
- Available to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays; available for on‑call work during snow events.
- Previous snowplowing and heavy equipment experience (asset).
- Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 (asset).
- Effective communicator with co‑workers and supervisors.
- Working safely is a condition of employment.
The company says it offers a union hourly rate starting at $38.05 an hour, a union benefits package, training and career development opportunities, and annual safety recognition and employee appreciation programs.
