RCMP marks 2nd anniversary of Cst. Rick O’Brien’s death
MAPLE RIDGE — It’s a solemn day for Ridge Meadows RCMP as the detachment marks two years since Constable Frederick ‘Rick’ O’Brien’s passing on duty.
“This time of year is always a difficult one for our detachment, and not a day goes by when many of us are not reminded of the void that Rick’s loss leaves behind,” said Superintendent Adam Gander, officer in charge of Ridge Meadows RCMP.
O’Brien was killed in an early morning shooting on September 22, 2023, while executing a search warrant in Coquitlam.
Since then, community members have remembered the constable through the annual youth law enforcement initiative, Cst. Rick O’Brien Joint Forces Jamboree, the Cst. Rick O’Brien Youth Lounge in Pitt Meadows and a Wall of Honour at the RCMP detachment in Haney Place.
“This support also underscores the strong relationship that has been built with this community and solidified, even more, a shared commitment to public safety,” Gander added.
“We are honoured to be your local police service and will continue to work together to create a safer, healthier, and stronger community.”
RCMP members will hold a private ceremony for the occasion today (Sep. 22) and plan to support all staff moving forward.
