Data from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) highlights the severity of the issue, with 46,600 vehicle break-ins and 7,500 car thefts reported in 2020 alone. Commonly targeted items include smartphones, tablets, laptops, work tools, and personal identification, all of which make vehicles prime targets for theft.
ICBC advises vehicle owners to treat their keys like they would treat cash. Never leave them unattended, whether at the gym, office, or in a shopping centre. It says removing visible valuables in their vehicle, such as electronics, shopping bags, and spare change can deter potential thieves.
