Chilliwack Fire Dept. called to overnight crash on Chilliwack River Road: witness
CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Fire Department, Chilliwack RCMP and B.C. Ambulance Service were called to the 7100 block of Chilliwack River Road overnight after a vehicle reportedly struck a power pole, according to a description from a nearby resident.
Chilliwack resident Hailey VanBasten says she was almost asleep when she heard a crash near an address in the 7100 block of Chilliwack River Road at about 2 a.m. early Friday morning (May 31), followed by the sound of a vehicle engine revving up.
” I got out of bed and went to tend to the accident scene while awaiting the fire department, paramedics and RCMP,” said VanBasten. “I was the second vehicle on scene; the first vehicle on scene was following the vehicle involved in the accident and witnessed the accident happen.”
VanBasten says the vehicle involved crashed through a power pole, resulting in the pole being snapped and low-hanging wires. The passenger of the involved vehicle took off with a box of alcohol cans in hand, VanBasten said, while the driver remained on scene with injuries, noting she was unsure of the extent of the injuries.
“I waited till first responders arrived and gave a statement to the RCMP,” VanBasten said.
Fraser Valley Today has reached out to the Chilliwack RCMP seeking comment on the alleged incident.
Chilliwack Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Chris Wilson said the Chilliwack RCMP is the lead agency on motor vehicle incidents, but did confirm that Chilliwack Fire Department crews attended and observed low-hanging wires upon arriving on scene.
A Chilliwack resident that listens to overnight scanner traffic, Julie Hiscock, released a recording of the dispatch call in which Engine 1 and 4 and Rescue 1 from the Chilliwack Fire Department were dispatched at 1:57 a.m. for a motor vehicle incident near 7130 Chilliwack River Road.
