UPDATE: Chilliwack RCMP continue to investigate circumstances around death of elderly pedestrian on Spruce Drive

The Chilliwack RCMP Traffic Section continue to complete a thorough investigation to determine what led to this tragic incident. CHILLIWACK — An elderly male who was struck by a car Tuesday morning (Mar. 12) on Spruce Drive in Sardis has died.
Chilliwack RCMP Corporal Carmen Kiener, spokesperson for the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment, confirmed in an email Friday morning that the victim succumbed to his injuries.
“Yes, I can confirm the male has died, we will be issuing a statement shortly,” Cpl. Kiener wrote in an email to Fraser Valley Today at 8:25 a.m. Friday.
On Wednesday, Chilliwack RCMP released a statement saying the Chilliwack pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle on Tuesday morning (Mar. 12) was currently in stable condition.
“On March 12, 2024 at 10:50 a.m., the Chilliwack RCMP responded to a report of a male pedestrian who had been hit by a single vehicle on Spruce Drive in Chilliwack, BC,” Chilliwack RCMP previously said. “Upon arrival, police officers located an elderly male suffering from serious injuries as a result of the collision. The male was air lifted to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services where he remains in stable condition.”
Corporal Carmen Kiener said Chilliwack RCMP frontline officers and its Traffic Section, accompanied by officers from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services, had been advancing the investigation to determine if criminality was a factor. Spruce Drive between Vedder Road and Wiltshire Road was closed for several hours Tuesday for the purpose of this investigation.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision remained on scene, and is cooperating fully with the police investigation, Cpl. Kiener said. The names of those involved in this incident have not been released to the public.
According to scanner traffic earlier Tuesday morning, Chilliwack Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the area. On arrival, they found a man on the ground who had been assisted by bystanders in the area.
B.C. EHS released a statement about Tuesday’s incident.
“BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 10:46 a.m. today, March 12, regarding a motor vehicle incident involving a pedestrian on Spruce Drive near Eden Street in Chilliwack,” according to public information officer Brian Twaites. “Two ground ambulances responded to the scene. Paramedics cared for one patient, who was transported to meet a BCEHS air ambulance and flown to hospital in critical condition.”
