Unity Christian of Chilliwack to play for 1A Boys Provincial Championships Saturday in Langley
CHILLIWACK — One week after the Unity Christian girls basketball team captured the B.C. School Sports 1A provincial championship, the Flames’ varsity boys basketball team will try to accomplish the same feat Saturday (March 9) at the Langley Events Centre.
The top-seeded Flames will take on Gidgalang Kuuyas Naay from Haida Gwaii at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in the B.C. School Sports 1A provincial championships.
Unity opened the provincial tournament with a decisive 78-37 win over Fort St. James Wednesday thanks to 15 points from Ryun Fukumoto, 14 points apiece from Luke Graham and Ryder Vander Kooi, and 10 from Ryan Post.
In the quarterfinals Thursday, a 21-5 run to start the game propelled the Flames to a convincing 94-42 win over the Golden Eagles. Jay Smiens had 17 points to lead Unity followed by 10 apiece from Fukumoto and Vander Kooi. Ryan Post added nine points, Caleb Friesen tallied seven points, and Nathan De visser poured in six points.
The Flames punched their ticket to Saturday’s championship game with a 77-63 win Friday over St. Ann’s Academy behind 36 points from Jay Smiens, 10 from Luke Graham and 9 from Ryun Fukumoto. Unity led 63-40 after three quarters.
Unity’s boys team consists of Ryun Fukumoto, Nathan de Visser, James Deraadt, Luke Graham, Aaron Flokstra, Luke McGee, Jay Smiens, Shogo Moradeyo, Ryan Post, Ryan Vander Kooi, Chris Janssen, R. Kingma and Caleb Friesen.
